Legislative Agenda
THE CHAMBER'S POLICY PROCESS IS MEMBER DRIVEN
The Chamber's public affairs department aims to lower members'
cost of doing business by working with local, state, and federal government
officials to improve the business climate in Northwest Ohio. The Chamber
believes that laws and regulations should serve the public without acting
as a detriment to business development and growth. Lawmakers should take
into account how new laws or regulations will affect a business's ability
to compete in the worldwide economy and continue to generate income and
jobs in Northwest Ohio.
MEMBERS ARE THE CENTER OF THE POLICY PROCESS
The foundation of the Chamber's policy process is a group of issue-oriented
subcommittees, which are open to all Chamber members. Each subcommittee
focuses on one of the following policy areas: economic development
and tax policy, workforce development, environmental policy,
infrastructure and workplace regulations.
Each subcommittee reports to the Chamber's government affairs
committee, which in turn makes recommendations to the Chamber's
board of trustees and the Toledo Small Business Association (TASBA)
board of directors. Through this process, every Chamber policy
position is eventually reviewed by about 100 Chamber members. This
guarantees that the policies of the Chamber are representative
of the Chamber's membership at large. This same process was used
to develop the 2004 Legislative Agenda, which will serve as a guide
for public officials to the Chamber's legislative priorities.
CAFE standards –
short for Corporate Average Fuel Economy – dictate the number of
miles per gallon that an automaker should get for the range of
vehicles it sells. Automotive Jobs Action Coalition (AJAC) is a
campaign to preserve our automotive related jobs. Read the
background on CAFÉ, the
AJAC talking points and
