Workforce Development/Education
The Chamber has been actively working to stimulate and support
workforce development efforts in Northwest Ohio. It is our goal to
ensure that area employers have the skilled labor necessary to
sustain and grow their businesses. It is imperative that our
workforce is successfully educated and trained. We need to support
programs that respond to the needs of area employers as well as
combining the efforts of workforce development and economic
development.
To more effectively respond to the growing demands on today's - and
tomorrow's - workers, we must consider a wide array of issues.
Modern education and training takes many forms, ranging from
traditional education (kindergarten through 12th grade and four year
colleges) to technical training (apprenticeships and community
colleges) to new learning mediums (television and Internet distance
learning).
The Chamber will pursue the many different areas that influence the
quality of our workforce. This includes exploring state legislation
and local reforms to our school system. Keeping this in mind, the
Chamber will focus its efforts on the following areas:
Promote efforts to reform Ohio's school funding formula that do
not harm Ohio's competitive ability to retain and attract
businesses.
Support initiatives to retrain dislocated and existing workers to
improve their job skills.
Encourage the preparation of youth for the workforce with
marketable skills that employers find acceptable and desirable.
Identify the needs of the business community and support the
implementation of a workforce development system that meets those
needs.
Promote efforts to reform Ohio's public sector collective
bargaining law to make it more consistent with the National Labor
Relations Act.
