August marks the celebration of National Black Business Month, a time to recognize and honor the contributions of Black entrepreneurs and business owners across the United States.

Whether you are a consumer, business owner, or community member, understanding the importance of National Black Business Month can inspire meaningful action and support.

The Origins and Purpose of National Black Business Month

National Black Business Month was founded in 2004 by Frederick E. Jordan and John William Templeton, two entrepreneurs who sought to highlight the economic contributions of Black-owned businesses and address the systemic challenges they face.

The purpose of this month-long observance is to encourage consumers and institutions to support Black-owned businesses and raise awareness about the unique obstacles these businesses often encounter, such as limited access to capital, underrepresentation, and historical disparities.

The Impact of Black-Owned Businesses

Black-owned businesses are a cornerstone of the American economy, contributing significantly to job creation, economic growth, and community development. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are over 3.6 million Black-owned businesses in the United States. These businesses range from small, family-owned enterprises to larger corporations, spanning various industries including retail, technology, healthcare, and professional services.

Despite their contributions, Black-owned businesses have historically faced significant challenges. National Black Business Month provides an opportunity to address these issues by encouraging consumers to consciously support Black-owned businesses, advocating for policies that promote economic equity, and fostering a more inclusive business environment.

How to Support Black-Owned Businesses

Supporting Black-owned businesses can be a powerful way to contribute to economic equity and community well-being. Here are some practical ways to get involved:

  1. Shop at Black-Owned Businesses: Make a conscious effort to buy products and services from Black-owned businesses. Whether you’re shopping for everyday essentials, dining out, or looking for professional services, consider choosing a Black-owned business. To find one, visit the Chamber's Minority, Women and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Directory.
  2. Promote Black-Owned Businesses: Use your social media platforms to highlight and recommend Black-owned businesses. Share your positive experiences and encourage others to support these businesses as well.
  3. Engage in Community Events: Many communities host events, markets, and fairs during National Black Business Month to showcase Black-owned businesses. Attend these events, meet the owners, and learn more about their products and services.
  4. Invest in Black-Owned Businesses: If you have the means, consider investing in Black-owned businesses. This can be done through purchasing stocks, providing loans, or participating in crowdfunding campaigns.
  5. Advocate for Policy Changes: Support policies and initiatives that aim to reduce economic disparities and provide more opportunities for Black entrepreneurs. This includes advocating for equal access to capital, business grants, and educational programs.

The Role of the Toledo Chamber of Commerce

The Toledo Chamber of Commerce is committed to supporting Black-owned businesses and promoting diversity and inclusion within the local business community. During National Black Business Month and throughout the year, the Chamber provides resources, networking opportunities, and advocacy to help Black entrepreneurs thrive. We encourage all members of our community to join us in celebrating and supporting Black-owned businesses in August and throughout the year.

Looking Ahead

National Black Business Month is a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of Black entrepreneurs and to take meaningful action to support their businesses. Let’s use this month as an opportunity to celebrate the diversity and resilience of our business community and commit to supporting Black-owned businesses year-round.
