| Last week, students, educators, and industry leaders gathered at the Imagination Station to celebrate the creativity, curiosity, and innovation showcased through the “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” student video contest—an initiative helping shape the future of Northwest Ohio’s workforce. Produced locally by the Northwest Ohio Manufacturing Alliance (NOMA), a program of the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce, this year’s contest brought together middle school students and regional manufacturers to tell powerful stories about modern manufacturing careers. |
Created by the Manufacturers Resource Center (MRC) in Allentown, PA in 2013, the What’s So Cool About Manufacturing® contest’s objective is to change students’ perceptions about manufacturing careers.
This year’s top honors included:
- Outstanding Overall Program: TPS McKinley - Marsha’s Buckeyes (LEFT)
- Viewers Choice: Otsego - SmartSolve Industries (CENTER)
- Best Outreach Plan: TPS Marshall - Riker Products (RIGHT)
More than just a competition, the event served as a powerful reminder of what happens when education and industry come together with intention: students see firsthand that manufacturing is not only viable—but exciting, innovative, and impactful. Following a community-wide online voting period in late March, the program culminated in an awards celebration recognizing student achievement across multiple categories—including creativity, storytelling, and overall production.

“Programs like ‘What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?’ are critical to helping students see themselves in careers they may not have previously considered,” said Lauryn Vargas, Workforce Initiatives Manager at the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce. “By connecting students directly with local manufacturers, we’re not only changing perceptions—we’re building confidence, sparking curiosity, and strengthening the future talent pipeline for our region.”
At the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce, we know that talent development is critical to our region’s long-term economic success. Programs like “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” directly support this by:
- Increasing awareness of modern manufacturing careers
- Strengthening connections between schools and employers
- Inspiring the next generation of skilled talent
By engaging students early and providing meaningful, hands-on experiences, we are helping build a pipeline of future innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders who will power Northwest Ohio’s economy.
The success of this year’s program—and the enthusiasm shown by students, educators, and manufacturing partners alike—underscores the importance of continued collaboration across sectors.
When we invest in experiences that connect talent to opportunity, we don’t just prepare students for careers—we strengthen our entire region.
