Next, we're excited to share the journey of Jennifer Kearns, President of Battery Wholesale. Jennifer’s path from luxury retail to leading a successful family-owned business exemplifies perseverance, adaptability, and the strength it takes to excel in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
Join us as we explore Jennifer’s experiences, insights, and advice on overcoming challenges, achieving balance, and fostering leadership in the small business world.
I began my career in luxury retail, initially working for Saks Fifth Avenue after graduating from The University of Cincinnati. Eventually, I joined Neiman Marcus in Chicago, aiming to climb the executive ranks of a luxury department store. However, after many trips back home to Toledo, I realized that the family business, Battery Wholesale, provided a better opportunity for long-term success. That’s when I made the transition to the battery industry, and now, I’m proud to lead the company as its president.
What were some of the barriers or obstacles you’ve faced & how did you overcome them?
As a young woman in the automotive aftermarket industry, I encountered significant resistance. Being in a traditionally male-dominated industry, I knew I had to prove myself as a leader. Through hard work and perseverance, I was able to overcome those challenges. My determination helped me establish myself, and over time, I earned the respect of my peers and colleagues.
Who inspired you to become a leader and why?
I’ve always had an internal drive to succeed and to be a leader. While there wasn’t one specific person who pushed me toward leadership, I was always motivated by the desire to grow, learn, and lead. Over the years, I developed leadership skills through experience and education, which has been crucial to my role today.
What advice do you have for women looking to grow either their own business or within the company they work for?
My biggest piece of advice is simple: don’t give up. You will encounter obstacles, but stay focused on your goals, keep moving forward, and always hold your head high. Persistence is key in any business endeavor.
How do you balance your career, personal life, and passions?
Balancing it all can be difficult, especially with two young kids, seven locations (soon to be eight), and a team that relies on me. However, I’m fortunate to have an amazing support system, including family and friends who help me manage everything. I’ve adopted non-traditional work hours to ensure I can balance both my career and my personal life. It’s not always easy, but I find ways to make it work.
What specific strategies or resources do you believe would help women develop or enhance their leadership skills?
Education has been a major factor in my confidence and ability to lead. Obtaining my MBA gave me the skills and self-assurance I needed to take on the responsibilities of running a business. I’m also a big advocate for the Toledo Chamber’s leadership classes and other professional development opportunities, as I believe they are essential for advancing in any career.
What upcoming TRCC event are you most looking forward to attending?
I’m really looking forward to the EPIC golf outing! It’s a fun event, and as an avid golfer, I always enjoy getting out on the course. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to network and meet new people in the Toledo business community each year.
