As Tariffs Rise, Exporting is More Important Than Ever

Around the world, from the U.S. and China to Japan and South Korea, with instability due to Brexit in the EU, global traders are easing off. The International Monetary Fund forecast global growth at 3 percent for 2019, which is the lowest since 2009.

Despite dips in the global trade market, in order to continue to grow the global economy as well as themselves, many economists argue, according to an article by BBC News, business leaders must continue to expand to new markets, uphold brand consistency and continue to export abroad.
The article mentions various forms of successful exporting ventures, including lapis lazuli found in the tomb of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun, believed to be from Afghanistan; silicon, most of which is mined and exported out of a small town in North Carolina; and Peru and Kenya's global efforts in flower exportation.

Think of the things we use every day; very few of our belongings are created from scratch in just one community. Consider your smartphone, which is made with goods not just from China, but Japan, Korea and California. Now think about your car; your engine might be from Japan, while your transmission might be from India. If we were to see a major decline in exporting, we'd also see a major decline in our quality of life.

According to the BBC article, agencies around the world traded more than $25 trillion in goods and services in 2018 alone, which equals the value of products affected by U.S. and Chinese tariffs 50 times over. So, while tariffs may be a reality, curbing your exporting will only hurt your business in the long run.

To read more about why exporting is so important, especially right now, read "Tensions highlight the importance of global trade" by BBC News.
