At a public hearing at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, Toledo City Council will review comprehensive updates to the city sign code which include banning placement of new billboards. The Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce opposes this proposed prohibition due to the negative impact it would have on our businesses and Toledo’s economy.
Prohibiting new billboards would place Toledo unnecessarily out of line with regulations in other Ohio metro cities. Local businesses and organizations depend on billboards as part of their strategy to tell potential customers about the products and services they have to offer. Unfortunately, these regulations would harm local businesses by inhibiting their ability to advertise job opportunities and promote services. Studies show our businesses stand to lose an average of 18 percent in sales without the ability to advertise on billboards.
Billboards are also important to Toledo’s economic vibrancy. In a recent survey of area individuals, 75 percent of respondents said billboards show there are things to do in Toledo. Furthermore, a significant majority said that they help promote the appearance of Toledo as a place of economic activity and success.
