The Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce congratulates the 30 emerging leaders who graduated from the 2018 Institute for Leadership & Advocacy. These graduates join the more than 300 leaders who have completed this training and are prepared to effectively serve their communities and engage in the government decision-making process.

The graduation ceremony took place March 26, 2018 at the Fallen Timbers Battlefield Metropark Visitor Center in Maumee. The ceremony included opening remarks from program facilitator Tim Schneider, Manager, Local Government Advocacy for the Chamber, and Ben Brown, Vice President, USI Insurance Services, and Chairman of The Leadership Fund PAC.

Keynote speaker Robert McColley, Ohio District 1 State Senator, provided encouraging words from experience in his current office and past service as District 81 State Representative. “To become good leaders, we must learn from the leaders around us,” stated McColley. He commended the graduates on doing this through their participation in the Institute.

Senator McColley shared the leadership value of never asking someone to do something they aren’t willing to do themselves. “Lead by example and with passion,” he urged the group. Also, using a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he encouraged graduates to remember to maintain their conviction and do the right thing, no matter how hard it might be.

The Institute is a 10-week course designed to prepare emerging leaders to effectively serve their communities and work with public officials. Participants engage in discussions about the issues, requirements and expectations associated with public service. Sessions are taught by highly-experienced professionals comprised of public officials and other regional leaders. The Institute includes year-long engagement in activities and events.

Formerly Leadership Academy, the program is in its 17th year and remains the longest running of its kind in the state. The Institute is made possible by the Chamber, The Leadership Fund, the Ohio State University Extension, and the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. We congratulate each of the following 2018 Institute graduates:

Before anything else, I want to congratulate all graduates of 2018 Institute for Leadership & Advocacy. It must have been a tough journey for everyone, but they all made sure to graduate and learn from what the school can offer. As what the school promises, their students will surely learn the leadership skills they all need to learn. It serves as a breeding ground for our future servants. I hope that they will be using this skill for a cause!
