When the census takes place every 10 years, a great deal of the attention for counting the number of people living in the United States is placed on how many members each state will get in the U.S. House of Representatives. In a similar manner, Ohio and other states use this information in redrawing state House and Senate district lines. Who represents you in Columbus and Washington absolutely matters. However, there is another important reason why the business community should care about the census. This information is often used when determining where funding for workforce development and infrastructure will be directed. Funding for Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Community Development Block Grants is also influenced by census information. Making sure that we have the appropriate financial resources to support transportation and training opportunities is critical to the economic success of the region.
