Richie, Jr. (NAHRO Fellow, Commissioner, Housing Authority of the City of Austin, TX)
Toledo, Ohio, October 8, 2018 – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority (LMHA) $165,819 for 41 housing vouchers that will provide permanent affordable housing to non-elderly persons with disabilities who are “transitioning out of institutionalization, or who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.” LMHA administers these funds through their Housing Choice Voucher Program.

In response to the news about the award, LMHA President and CEO Demetria Simpson said “LMHA is very pleased that we received these vouchers. We are now able to serve more people who have a great need for housing. They will give individuals with disabilities housing opportunities within stable communities.”
LMHA was also recently honored by the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment (NAHRO) with two 2018 Awards of Merit. The NAHRO Awards program was created to recognize agencies who found innovative ways of making a difference in their communities and in the lives of the people they serve by creating affordable housing, revitalizing their neighborhoods and developing initiatives such as job readiness programs, public-private partnerships, disaster prevention projects and more. The winning LMHA projects were: Coffee Cafés “Coffee and Conversation” and Well2Unity Bootcamp.

Coffee Cafes, located at the senior/disabled developments (Robert Dorrell Manor, Glendale Gardens, Vistula Manor, TenEyck Towers, Ashley Arms and Parqwood), allow residents to enjoy a cup of coffee and conversation.

Topics including health and wellness, current events and resident concerns are discussed. Starbuck® provides a monthly donation of various coffees to the cafés.

Well2Unity Bootcamp was sponsored by a grant from the Toledo Walleye Foundation. The Bootcamp was an 8-week fitness program focused on physical fitness and nutrition. Fabulously Fit conducted fitness instruction, while nutrition classes were conducted by Ohio State University Extension Program.
