Happy Military Appreciation Month! In May, we recognize, celebrate and honor all of the members of our Toledo Region community who are serving or who have served in our nation's military. Please enjoy this Q&A with Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce member LaScala, Inc. and its CEO, U.S. Army veteran Gregory LaScala.
U.S. Army stationed in Fort Riley, KS, 1st Infantry Division, and honorably discharged in 1995.
How did your service prepare you to be a business owner?
My service in the Army has prepared me with several transferable business skills including discipline, leadership, teamwork, maintenance, and security.
What should others know about the advantages of hiring veterans?
Throughout the military, veterans learn and build character, morals, and standards through continuous experiences. Veterans are punctual, dedicated, and reliable. The military taught me how to be compassionate and appreciate other people’s perspectives which helps extend my client relationships.
What are some of your favorite things to do in the Toledo Region?
Toledo amazing restaurants and entertaining concert venues. I enjoy spending time outdoors in nature as much as possible. Additionally, the Toledo area offers numerous opportunities for outdoor recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, Toledo Zoo, and Toledo Metroparks. I also frequent Toledo Mud Hens and Toledo Walleye games whenever possible.
How can the region better support veteran-owned businesses?
Additional support could include offering more job fairs, fund raising events, and other outreach programs to help veterans get back into the job market or aid them with health-related issues. There are a lot of programs available but should be more communication and education about those programs.
