Tom Schaeffer is a community oriented man. He had a vision for a brewery that not only made good beer, but was committed to making a positive contribution to the community. He shared this idea with a few friends and built the team of founders. Together, they decided to locate the business in downtown Toledo and to play a part in the revival that is taking place. Thus, Black Cloister was born.
The name Black Cloister Brewing Company wasn’t just drawn out of a hat. It has a rich history and deep meaning to founding member and pastor Schaeffer. Nestled on the corner of Erie and Monroe in downtown Toledo, the mural inside the brewery has quickly become an iconic place to take a photo. “I think there are very few places in the country that you could find a building available in a downtown at this price with this character. It is the perfect place for our monastic themed brewery. Additionally, we are so excited to see and be a part of the development of downtown Toledo.” – Tom Schaeffer, Black Cloister Brewing Company Currently, Black Cloister has twelve employees and their great beer is available in bars, restaurants, and growler stations throughout NW Ohio. So far expansion has taken them to the city of Columbus and they will soon move into the Michigan market. The production brewery will produce their first 6-pack cans on September 8th. Commitment to the community is essential to Black Cloister’s mission “Brew good. Do good.” They have worked with numerous non-profits throughout the area providing both monetary, in-kind, and volunteer support. They are also active in multiple Toledo organizations such as the Chamber, Destination Toledo, and the Historic Warehouse District. Something you may not expect of a hip brewpub – one of their owners (Schaeffer) is a Lutheran pastor and currently meets with his congregation at 11 am on Sunday mornings in the brewpub. Another awesome fact: Shannon Fink and Mo Cherry are the brewers and make up the only all-female brewhouse in the state of Ohio. The team at Black Cloister is very excited for the future. “The reception for our business has been fantastic in Toledo. We are excited for the future of our brand and our city.” – Tom Schaeffer Connect with Black Cloister |
