Mike and Karen Langenderfer opened their doors as a cabinet and countertop installation shop in 1990. In 2003, The Countertop Shop was doing so many countertops that they shut down the cabinet part of the business to focus solely on fabricating and installing residential countertops. Now the company does a broad range of countertop business, working with homebuilders, remodelers and kitchen and bath dealers. Their tagline is “everything from laminate to granite.” An ideal job for the team is something that is a one or two day install. They stay away from giant commercial jobs because of the strain on resources for a several month install. However, they do take on smaller commercial jobs and you can admire their work at some of the newly remodeled McDonald’s, Mancy’s, Tony Packo’s, Dave & Buster’s and more around town.
The Countertop Shop has plans to continue to be a family business for years to come. Says Mike, “I’m involved with the National Association of Countertop Fabricators and we are currently conducting a generation two study. My advice to those in the industry is to get the second generation involved and teach them to understand that the business is all about relationships. You have to network and make connections.”
Mike takes his own advice and currently two of his and Karen’s children work at The Countertop Shop. He recognizes the importance of making connections on both a National and local level and currently is a member of the Holland Springfield Chamber of Commerce, the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce and sits on the Toledo Area Small Business Association Board.
When asked, ‘why the Toledo Region?’ Mike can’t think of anywhere he’d rather have his business. A local St. John’s High School and University of Toledo graduate, it was natural for him to move back to the area after serving as a management officer in the Marine Corps. “I really don’t want to go anyplace else. I’ve been to Italy, Spain, California, Florida, Texas….and Toledo, Ohio is just a great place to be. I love the change of seasons and the people. We are a good economy here.”
The Countertop Shop currently has 35 full time employees. Stop by and browse the more than 300 slabs of countertop material that they have available on site, or speak with a consultant to design something custom. All of the countertops are cut and prepared for installation right at the shop on Airport Highway so quality can be guaranteed.
