Our businesses should not have to question the reliability of mail service, especially as they deal with the unprecedented uncertainty brought by COVID-19. The Chamber will continue to monitor developments related to mail processing operations for our region and advocate for solutions that benefit the business community and the region as a whole. In the near future watch for a follow-up survey to track potential improvements in delivery timeframes among businesses.
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) announced last week that all mail sorting for northwest Ohio will be moved from its processing facility in Pontiac, Michigan to its processing facility in Cleveland, Ohio beginning September 16 and ending November 14. While this is a temporary decision to support prompt delivery of absentee ballots and request forms for the November election, the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce hopes it results in timely delivery of all mail and consideration for ultimately re-establishing processing services in Toledo. Complaints of untimely mail processing have persisted in our area since USPS transferred sorting from Toledo to the Michigan facility in 2012. In a recent survey of Chamber member businesses, more than 70 percent of respondents indicated that delays in USPS mail delivery are negatively impacting them and their customers. In response, the Chamber sent a letter to the Postmaster General requesting that USPS evaluate the feasibility of returning mail processing operations to Toledo in order to provide consistent and reliable service.
