What You Should Know About Managed Care Organizations in Ohio, and Why Choose HMS

As a business owner or leader, your business is of vital importance to you – and your employees are the lifeblood of that business. By protecting your employees and ensuring their safety, you’re also protecting your business.
This is true of all businesses, but especially small businesses, whose employees are like family. And when one of your family members gets sick or injured, it becomes your top priority to get that person well again and get them back to life as usual.

A managed care organization, or MCO, is a health care company or health plan that helps you do just that: take care of your employees and, by proxy, your business. It helps you to group together providers like doctors, hospitals and other care organizations that can meet your business and your employees’ needs if and when something bad happens on the job. It is not only required by law in Ohio to have workers’ compensation coverage for employers with one or more employees, it is also required to designate an MCO. It’s important that you choose the right one that gives your employees the care they need to get back to work safely and as quickly as possible.

Your business has two opportunities to choose an MCO: first when you start your business, and second during an open enrollment period. Open enrollment periods typically occur every two years, and the current open enrollment runs May 3-28, 2021. This is the perfect time to evaluate your current MCO to ensure that it is meeting you and your employees’ unique needs and, if necessary, to choose a new MCO.

Some good news is there is no cost for having an MCO, and the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) pays for the services your MCO provides your business and employees from the state’s insurance fund. Even better news is that the BWC publishes a report card each year so you can evaluate your own MCO, and all the information is at your fingertips so you can make a well-informed choice should you desire to switch to a new MCO. This report card measures metrics like medical management quality, safe return-to-work strategies and service timelines. The current 2021 report card is based on measurements from MCOs from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2020.

Health Management Solutions, Inc. (HMS) has been rated Ohio’s No. 1 MCO in return-to-work performance for six out of the last seven years. By choosing HMS, you’re making a commitment to your employees to get them well again should an issue arise. HMS provides a smoother, faster return-to-work experience, ensuring your employees feel their best and your business gets back to running at full speed following an incident.

Some other key resources you should review before choosing a new MCO include:
  • MCO Selection Guide: Provides information like the selection process and the MCOs available to you
  • MCO Directory: A cheat sheet for the contact information for each of Ohio’s MCOs, including the information on where to call or email to report an injury, submit medical and send bills.

Once you’ve reviewed the information the BWC has provided to you, you can use the MCO Selection Form to choose the new MCO for your business.

By selecting HMS for your MCO, you join nearly 20,000 Ohio employers in entrusting their workers’ compensation claims and more. HMS provides Ohio employers like you with aggressive medical management of claims, safety and education programs, medical bill payment and audit, a 24-hour injury reporting hotline, bilingual capabilities, and more.
