A managed care organization, or MCO, is a health care company or health plan that helps you do just that: take care of your employees and, by proxy, your business. It helps you to group together providers like doctors, hospitals and other care organizations that can meet your business and your employees’ needs if and when something bad happens on the job. It is not only required by law in Ohio to have workers’ compensation coverage for employers with one or more employees, it is also required to designate an MCO. It’s important that you choose the right one that gives your employees the care they need to get back to work safely and as quickly as possible.
Your business has two opportunities to choose an MCO: first when you start your business, and second during an open enrollment period. Open enrollment periods typically occur every two years, and the current open enrollment runs May 3-28, 2021. This is the perfect time to evaluate your current MCO to ensure that it is meeting you and your employees’ unique needs and, if necessary, to choose a new MCO.
Some good news is there is no cost for having an MCO, and the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) pays for the services your MCO provides your business and employees from the state’s insurance fund. Even better news is that the BWC publishes a report card each year so you can evaluate your own MCO, and all the information is at your fingertips so you can make a well-informed choice should you desire to switch to a new MCO. This report card measures metrics like medical management quality, safe return-to-work strategies and service timelines. The current 2021 report card is based on measurements from MCOs from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2020.
